The one question that steers everything
Are today's listings real?
Everything in this prototype gets built either way. What changes is the order, and what happens to the twelve listings currently on the marketplace. Both branches are drawn here so the answer is a steering wheel, not a blocker.
If they're seeded — supply first
- Label or retire the demo listings. Keep them out of search until real inventory replaces them — an indexable page of placeholder animals burns the first impression with both buyers and Google.
- Ship the list-from-records switch. Supply now comes from the records install base, not a recruitment campaign.
- Point the ranch visits at seeding. The surveying service already enters whole herds into the system; every visited ranch becomes listable inventory. Founders pick the first 15–25 operations personally.
- Open the marketplace when the number is hit. A launch threshold written down in advance — enough listings that a buyer finds a market, not a lobby. Then the demand work in the other column starts.
If they're real — demand first
- The supply gate is already passed. Twelve real animals from real sellers means the marketplace's problem was never inventory — it was that nothing could be found or trusted.
- Fix findability this month. Unique titles and descriptions per listing, sitemap, species pages — the plumbing is server-rendered already; this is finishing work.
- Add the trust layer. Document states on cards, seller pages, Reserve replacing the cart, escrow terms on the page. Everything in this prototype's marketplace section.
- Then widen supply with the list-from-records switch and ranch visits — from a marketplace that demonstrably sells, which is a far easier pitch.
Either way, three things are true
The records product is the supply engine. The handover is the moat and the growth loop. And the fees should sit on escrow and paperwork — the parts nobody can do off-platform — not on the introduction. A timed auction event is the accelerant option in both branches if discovery needs concentrating; the industry already trades that way.
Honest failure mode
Most marketplaces in thin, relationship-driven categories decay into classifieds. This plan is shaped so that outcome is still a win: verified listings with documents and seller pages feeding a growing records business. If the transaction layer takes too, better — but nothing here bets the company on GMV.
